Today marks exactly 12 months since Royals, the smash hit penned and sung by an Auckland school girl climbed to the top of the NZ Top 40 Singles Chart on debut. The intervening year has seen the North Shore teen rise from internet sensation to global superstar.
From receiving her first awards at the Silver Scroll and Vodafone NZ Music Awards to the Grammys and Brit Awards, Ella Yelich-O'Connor has certainly made her mark on the world. She’s appeared on countless magazine covers (including Rolling Stone) and signed collaboration deals with the likes of M.A.C.
The worldwide critical acclaim she has garnered in such a short time frame is a testament to her musical talent, as Damian Vaughan of Recorded Music NZ recognises
“It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year since ‘Royals’ topped our charts, and now she’s got four Tuis, two Grammys and a Brit Award under her belt as well as countless magazine covers and collaboration deal,†says Vaughan
“Ella has managed to compose a universal hit with a subject matter and lyrics that people around the globe can relate to. She hit at a time where her unique style and sound came as a breath of fresh air to the industry; her individuality resonates with music fans worldwide and it’s seen her reach phenomenal heights in her career after only 12 months. We look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.â€
