The Serious Crash Unit has been called in to investigate the cause of a crash that injured an elderly woman who was standing at the ‘hole in the wall’ outside the ANZ bank in Seddon Street Waihi today.
It appears that the driver of a car has lost control of his vehicle, mounted the kerb and hit the woman injuring her.
A staff member at Gold FM heard a car rev and looked out of the window in time to see people rushing to help the woman who was hit.
Bank staff and members of the public went to help and made the woman as comfortable as they could and waited for the ambulance to arrive.
Police were first on the scene and the Waihi Fire & Rescue Service and an ambulance arrived a short time later.
Ambulance staff worked on the woman while the fire service directed traffic, as Seddon Street was blocked by a fire appliance outside the bank and police cars.
The air ambulance helicopter arrived at Morgan Park on Clarke Street and the woman was loaded into the ambulance and taken to the waiting helicopter where she was transported to hospital.
The ANZ bank has been closed for the day.
