It was lights out for half of Coromandel town on the weekend after a car with three party goers leaving a 21st at the Coromandel Rugby Club hit a parked vehicle, went through a fence and smashed into a power pole.

The pole with a transformer fell onto the car injuring the occupants, aged 19, 20 and 21.

Two men were trapped in the car and friends walking home from the birthday celebrations were trying to free the men when the fire service arrived.

The driver is likely to face charges as he was unlicensed and had already been forbidden to drive the vehicle. It is thought speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

The men were driven to the Thames airfield and flown to hospital by the rescue helicopter.
