Waihi rugby teams posted mixed results on an extremely warm day in Te Aroha on Saturday.
Waihi’s Senior Bs got their season off to a great start with a one sided romp against Te Aroha Cobras running out winners 49-3 after leading 26-0 at half time.
The much fitter and more skilled Waihi side ran the ball at most opportunities with many great team tries. With a lot of players showing good early season form, the pressure will be on players in the ‘A’ squad to keep playing well.
Waihi’s Senior A game also against Cobras produced some excellent rugby with high intensity. Waihi had some early chances to open the scoring but sadly young Bradley Wilson was just astray with his two penalty attempts.

Play see-sawed from end to end with some high quality attack and defence shown from both sides. Cobras had the better of the first half scoring two converted tries, the second a coach killer right on the half time hooter.
Trailing 14-0, Waihi produced a couple of fine tries of their own to draw level, 14 all, with just fifteen minutes to play. Sadly things didn’t quite go to plan with Cobras scoring three tries to one over this final period, running out winners 31-19, a score that didn’t reflect how close the game really was.
The game was marred by an ugly head clash between two Waihi players with Kahu Craig-Ranga suffering a fractured cheek bone which may end his season. The team wishes him a speedy recovery.
Both teams are at home next week so head along and cheer on the local boys and watch some exciting rugby.
