A fire which took hours to extinguish could see a Whitianga landowner being sent a bill of up to $20,000 to recover the cost of dousing the flames.

The fire service was called out to Mill Creek Road on Monday afternoon after a blaze spread quickly through dry scrub, jumped tracks and set a stand of gum trees alight.

The fire was aided by windy conditions and fire fighters used two helicopters with monsoon buckets, two fire engines and two water tankers to douse the flames.

A farm worker was working in the area when the fire ignited and farmers are being warned that machinery operating in the tinder dry conditions can cause sparks which start fires that could lead to them being held responsible.
