Donations have been pouring in for the children of a 26 year old mother, Tracey O’Brien, who was killed when her car collided with a people mover outside a wedding venue near Te Puna on Saturday.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of th...e crash on State Highway Two. The cars collided just before 12:30 pm and Tracey O'Brien died soon afterwards.
Her two young children, Phoenix and Faith, were cut from her car and taken to hospital in critical condition.
A website page www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/phoenixandfaith has been set up to receive donations for the children. Four year old Phoenix and three year old Faith are reported to be in a stable condition. Phoenix is still in an induced coma and Faith is reported to be doing well despite a head injury.
The children’s father, Matt Ruddell, is a chef at a Tauranga restaurant and his friends and colleagues have rallied around to support him as he comforts his children at Starship Hospital.
A day of joy turned into one of sadness for the wedding party at the wedding venue, Charlemagne Lodge, above the crash site. The groom and his groomsmen rushed to help the fatally injured young mother and her children after hearing the crash. Because the vehicle was leaking fluid and smoke was in the air by the time the groom, Tauranga mechanic Jordan Mountford arrived he worked quickly to disconnect the car's battery. He expressed his love and condolences to Tracey O'Brien's family and friends when he was interviewed afterwards adding that he is very grateful the children survived the crash.
The wedding went ahead - but a little later than planned.
The occupants of the other vehicle involved in the incident, a people mover carrying 2 adults and 4 children, escaped serious injuries.
The Police serious crash unit is investigating to determine the cause of the accident.
