The person who dumped rubbish illegally on the summit of Kuaotunu Hill has been identified and the Thames Coromandel District Council wants to see the litter bug pay to have the rubbish cleaned up and dumped properly.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the discarded waste was finding a large box of live ammunition (known as fly dumping) and shards of broken glass just metres from a picnic table.
TCDC Compliance Team Leader Steve Hart says he is appalled that individuals continue to dump rubbish into the otherwise pristine environment.
"We were really shocked to discover such a quantity of live ammunition and dangerous items such as shards of glass covered with a sheet so close to a picnic site. Unfortunately fly dumping is not uncommon at this location and we will work with the New Zealand Transport Authority who owns the land and the police to deal with the offender and will look at methods to monitor the site more closely," he says.
The ammunition has been handed to the police for further investigation.
