Damien Hermond is a big hearted 'Every Day Hero’. Tomorrow, he’s taking part in Bay of Plenty@Heart's Heart Stopper Challenge – “I'm going be plunging into a pool of icy water for 5 minutes to show my support for Bay of Plenty@Heart, the organisation that supports heart kids and their families living in the Bay of Plenty regionâ€, Damien said.
“I'll be plunging to draw attention to the 12 babies born every week in New Zealand with a heart defect and I'm hoping to raise some much-needed funds for the amazing charity behind this chilly eventâ€.
Bay of Plenty@Heart is part of @Heart Inc, the national organisation that provides all sorts of vital services at no cost to heart families, and they receive no government funding for any of it. Locally, Bay of Plenty@Heart fund hospital packs for heart families full of toiletries and special treats for a stay in hospital, and travel subsidies to allow a second support person to accompany the heart child and primary caregiver to Auckland, as no one should face the uncertainties of surgery alone. They also provide (among other things) a local Family Support Worker, and a Murmurs coffee group for new heart mums and dads.
“What you really need to know is that the need is great, and I'll be doing my part plunging into 8 degree temperatures to help make a difference. Your part is easy - please support me in my challenge by making a donation to my page - large or small, it all helps Bay of Plenty@Heart, and it'll help to keep my heart warm when my fingers and toes have gone numb!â€
Damien is aiming to raise $500 and he's well on his way, but could do with a few golden hearted Waihi peoples' support.
Go here to donate. Good luck Damien!
