Waikino Teen Can Help Canteen

Seventeen year old Konagh Garrett from Waikino was absolutely delighted when her design was chosen for CanTeen’s 2012 bandanna design.

“CanTeen patients and siblings can enter a design to be made into a bandanna, which are sold to raise money for CanTeen. Only three from all the entries are selected. I entered last year and was short listed,” says Konagh.

Konagh’s design is called “Pasifica” and she has taken inspiration from designs on tapa cloth. “I used to draw a design similar to this when I was younger and it seemed appropriate to use it now.”

First of all she drew the design on paper and then on the computer using Word and Paint programmes. “It took a long time.” Konagh designed it in blue and white but it has been printed in purple and white, which she thinks looks even better.

CanTeen is the only organisation in New Zealand that supports cancer patients and their siblings from the age of 13 to 24. Konagh does not receive a prize but has the satisfaction of seeing her design made up and worn and she has her signature printed in the corner of the bandanna.

Konagh is in her last year at Waihi College and will be studying biological sciences at either Waikato or Auckland University.

The bandannas cost $4.00 each and if you'd like one phone Konagh on 863 7153. Keep your eye out around town as well. Some retailers are stocking and selling the bandannas.
