The Serious Crash Unit is investigating a crash that killed a teenage girl on Saturday afternoon.
Debris was scattered across the road and the right wheel was ripped off her car in a head on collision.
The teenager was crushed behind the wheel of her south-bound car when it collided with a vehicle that was travelling north on State Highway 2 near Maramarua.
A 22 year old male passenger in the car was taken to Thames hospital with moderate injuries.
The driver of the north-bound car, a 45 year old woman was transported to Auckland hospital by the rescue helicopter with serious injuries.
Police have not yet officially released the name of the deceased girl, her passenger, or the other driver.
