What's a 'Stroopwafel'?Â Give up?
It's a waffle biscuit made from two thin layers of baked batter with a caramel like syrup filling in the middle.
And for one Waihi woman it's a winner! Her traditional Dutch delicacy had judges at the annual Cuisine Artisan Food Awards salivating for more and Jeanette Distelbrink's tempting treats have been given the big thumbs up and named the winner of the 'Sweet Offerings' category.
The most popular biscuit in Holland, Stroopwafels are typically enjoyed as 'lids' for hot drinks. Putting a biscuit on top of a hot cuppa and leaving it to warm through for a few minutes results in a sweet gooey treat good enough to place her amongst the top 12 finalists in the national competition.
Jeanette, who changed her address from Holland to New Zealand 30 years ago, saw a gap in the market for a kiwi made version of the Dutch favourite and works hard baking, hand cutting and packaging her waffles and educating everyone she meets to taste test her product.
She travels to Farmer's Markets with a panini press serving up her warm waffles and encouraging people to tuck a pack or 2 in their baskets for 'tucking into' at home and she's always on the look-out for outlets to sell waffles.
A number of shops around the Waikato are now stocking Jeanette's Distel Stoopwafels.
