On Saturday the 13th October, a record field of runners and walkers will be tackling the scenic trails of Waihi’s native bush for the third annual XTERRA Trail Waihi Challenge event during GoldFest.
Over 900 competitiors have so far been confirmed for this year's event and they come from all walks of life. The organisers Total Sport said, "We are all about getting you, your mates, and your family off the roads and onto some stunning trails - this couldn't be truer than with the XTERRA Trail Challenge - Waihi. Big on fun in a casual, low key environment, you are going to have a blast!"
The XTERRA Trail Challenge is the culmination of the popular XTERRA Auckland Trail Run / Walk series, 6 events that are held in some of the best off-road locations in and around the greater Auckland region - and now Waihi. It is open to off-road and trail enthusiasts of all ages, abilities and levels of keenness!
"For those of you who like to make it even more of a challenge, or who have a couple of screws loose - this year we have the 60km Ultra Marathon. Â This is a truly epic course and will go down as one of the best ultra marathons in the country. Â Alias the "Kaimai Killer" it will make you burn!" Total Sport said of the event on their website.
Adding to the excitement of the XTERRA Trail Challenge Waihi is a myriad of natural obstacles scattered along the course, the sort of thing that is attracting so many to trail running and walking. There are three swing bridges hanging over the Karangahake River and even an underground tunnel section. Parts of the course follow old tramping and tramway tracks through the bush clad gorge.
Each year Total Sport receives positive feedback about the course from the competitors. From elite athletes to families getting out and taking a walk, the XTERRA Trail Challenge Waihi offers challenging courses for every level of ability and is growing in popularity.
Cam, the event manager for Total Sport this year said they couldn't do it without the help of the dedicated volunteers who turn out each year. About 30 locals have put their hands up to help out at the XTERRA Trail Challenge this year.
It's not too late to enter. Registration is happening at the Waihi Visitor Centre on Seddon Street from 4 to 9 pm today. Cam said, if someone turned up in time tomorrow morning and wants to enter they might be able to 'twist his arm'.
The best place to view the event and cheer the competitors on is Dickeys Flat. We're keeping our fingers crossed that the weather behaves.
