A fire that gutted The Cove, a well known Hahei restaurant last night is being treated as ‘suspicious’.
Firefighters from around the Coromandel Peninsula were called to action to fight the fire which gutted The Cove. It was well alight when the first of eight fire appliances arrived and the fire is being described as one of the biggest, if not the biggest in Hahei’s history.
The Cove had been renovated over the winter by cook come volunteer fireman Tim Stephens, who was leasing the restaurant he’d worked at for five years.
Tim is still reeling from the shock of learning that it was his restaurant that was burning when he arrived at the Fire Station after the call went out.
Fire safety officers will be conducting investigations at the scene of the fire today to determine it's cause.
