An 18 year old man believed to be from Huntly is dead after a head on collision near Katikati at about 5 pm yesterday.
An investigation is underway following the fatal crash.
A stolen vehicle was seen in the Waihi area and was followed in a line of traffic into the Bay of Plenty District by Police who alerted staff across the border.
Early indications are that the Police continued to follow the vehicle in a line of traffic when it suddenly sped away out of sight of police and crashed almost immediately into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on State Highway 2 near Lindemann Road.
The 18 year old male driver and sole occupant of the stolen vehicle died at the scene. The 54 year old Waihi male driver who was the sole occupant of the other vehicle was taken to hospital. His exact condition is unknown at this stage but is believed to be serious.
District Commander for Bay of Plenty District Police, Superintendent Glenn Dunbier, said: "It's very early into the investigation so full details are still to be ascertained. The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified as a matter of course and we will ensure that there is a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances that led up to this tragedy."
A number of witnesses are in the process of being interviewed but anyone else who witnessed the crash or has information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.
