There's been a lot of talk and speculation around town in the past few weeks about Newmont's activities. We've been asked and told a bit of interesting information, but is it all rumour?
Question: Are Newmont opening an office in Seddon Street?
Question: Have they got an announcement coming that is not ready to be shared?
Answer: Depends on who you talk to.
The official word we have through reads:
August 15 2011
Newmont Waihi Gold is looking at opening a visitor centre in Seddon Street to provide more information about our activities in and around Waihi.
We are committed to ensuring residents understand our mining and exploration operations and have the opportunity to raise questions and concerns.
The centre will also highlight our commitment to local environmental and community programmes and highlight modern mining safety practices used by Newmont Waihi Gold.
“Our 0800 NEWMONT (0800 639 6668) community engagement line is still available for residents in our community who wish to contact us by phone,” says External Affairs Manager Sefton Darby.
“This new information office is for those who prefer to talk to us in person.”
